Why We Sell by Cubic Meter (M3)

Organic materials like topsoil, compost, bark and woodchip are sold by volume rather than weight. Selling by cubic meter ensures you get the right volume for coverage, regardless of moisture content or material density. 1 cubic meter (1000L) is approximately 2 bulk bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grade A Topsoil best used for?

Grade A Topsoil is our highest quality screened topsoil, ideal for gardens, landscaping, lawns, turfing and borders and beds when mixed with compost. It's been screened to remove stones and debris, providing a fine, workable soil suitable for establishing new grass, planting, and top-dressing existing lawns. For the best results on lawns and turfing projects, we recommend Grade A over unscreened alternatives. We deliver small and large bulk loads to Thatcham, Newbury, Reading, Basingstoke and surrounding areas in Berkshire, North Hampshire and Southern Oxfordshire.

Why do you sell topsoil and compost by cubic meter instead of tonne?

Organic materials like topsoil, compost, bark and woodchip are sold by volume (cubic meter) rather than weight (tonne) because their weight varies significantly with moisture content and density. Selling by cubic meter ensures you get the right volume for coverage regardless of how wet or dry the material is. As a guide, 1 cubic meter equals 1000 litres, which is approximately 2 bulk bags. For comparison, aggregates like sand, gravel and sub base are sold by tonne because their density is more consistent. This approach ensures fair and accurate pricing for our customers.

What is ericaceous soil and when should I use it?

Ericaceous soil is a specially formulated acidic growing medium with a low pH (typically 4.5-6.0), designed for acid-loving plants. It's essential for rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers, blueberries and Japanese maples — plants that cannot thrive in standard alkaline or neutral soil. Using ericaceous soil helps these plants absorb iron and other nutrients properly, preventing yellowing leaves (chlorosis) and poor growth. If your garden has naturally chalky or alkaline soil, ericaceous soil is particularly important for successful cultivation of acid-loving species.

What's the difference between topsoil, compost and topsoil compost blend?

Topsoil is mineral-based soil used as the growing layer for lawns, planting and general landscaping — it provides structure and essential minerals but may be lower in organic nutrients. Compost is decomposed organic matter used to improve soil structure, retain moisture and add nutrients — it's too rich to plant directly into but excellent for mulching and soil improvement. Topsoil Compost Blend combines both in a ready-mixed product ideal for raised beds, vegetable gardens and allotments where you want the structure of topsoil plus the nutrients of compost. We offer two types of blend to suit different planting applications.

How much topsoil or compost do I need?

As a rough guide: for new lawns, allow 50-75mm (2-3 inches) of topsoil, which equals approximately 1 cubic meter per 15-20 square metres. For raised beds and borders, 150-300mm depth is typical — around 1 cubic meter per 3-6 square metres depending on depth. For mulching with bark or woodchip, 50mm depth gives good weed suppression — approximately 1 cubic meter per 20 square metres. Remember 1 cubic meter is approximately 2 bulk bags.
