Frequently Asked Questions

What are specialist materials and how are they different from primary aggregates?

Specialist materials are products usually specified by a designer, architect or engineer for a particular performance requirement — for example, a self binding gravel path, a ground reinforcement grid, a gabion stone wall, an equestrian ménage surface, or a decorative gravel from a named English or Welsh quarry. Unlike primary aggregates such as Building Sand, Sharp Sand or Ballast, specialist materials require more careful planning, calculation and sourcing to ensure the correct product, colour, grading and quantity arrives on site. Call 01635 865679 to discuss your specification.

What are Ecco grid systems used for?

Ecco Products grid systems are plastic cellular grids used for ground reinforcement, grass protection, gravel stabilisation, parking areas and access roads. They spread loads, prevent rutting and allow grass or gravel to remain trafficable while protecting the surface beneath. They are commonly specified by engineers and landscape architects for SuDS-compliant car parks, emergency access routes, driveways and overflow parking. We supply Ecco grids alongside the correct sub-base and infill materials for a complete installation.

What sizes of gabion stone do you supply?

Gabion stone is supplied in sizes suitable for the basket aperture — typically 100–200mm for standard gabion baskets, with smaller and larger grades available for architectural cages or large engineered retaining structures. We can source angular and rounded gabion stone in a range of colours including buff, grey and granite from quarries across England and Wales. Tell us your basket size and project type and we will calculate the tonnage required and arrange bulk delivery.

Do you supply equestrian ménage and riding arena surfaces?

Yes — we supply specialist play surfaces and equestrian products including silica sand, rubber crumb, fibre-mix surfaces and sub-base materials for horse ménage, riding arenas, lunge pens and gallops. The correct surface depends on the discipline (dressage, jumping, general schooling), the base build-up and drainage. We can advise on suitable specifications and quantities, and arrange direct delivery to equestrian facilities throughout Berkshire, North Hampshire and Southern Oxfordshire.

What is self binding gravel and where can it be used?

Self binding gravel is a naturally graded gravel containing fines that, when laid and compacted, bind together to create a firm, natural-looking surface ideal for pathways, driveways, country estates, heritage sites and public spaces. It offers a softer, more traditional appearance than tarmac or block paving while remaining low maintenance and SuDS-friendly. We supply self binding gravels in a range of colours from quarries across England and Wales — contact us with your area and depth so we can calculate exact tonnage.

Can you source decorative gravel from a specific quarry?

Yes. Many designers and architects specify a particular decorative gravel by name, colour or quarry of origin. Willis & Ainsworth can supply most gravel from across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland to meet designer or architect specified projects. Provide us with the product name or specification sheet and we will source it, confirm availability and lead time, and arrange delivery direct to your site.

How do I calculate how much specialist material I need?

Specialist materials require careful calculation because the wrong quantity means costly delays or excess material on site. As a rough guide: gravel and self binding gravel typically cover around 40–50m² per tonne at 50mm depth; gabion stone fills approximately 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre of basket. For accurate figures we need your area, depth, product and grade. Call 01635 865679 with your dimensions or designer specification and we will calculate exactly what is required.

Do you supply pre-filled hessian sand bags?

Yes — we stock pre-filled Hessian Sand Bags (15KG) ready for immediate use in flood defence and construction applications. Pre filling ensures consistent weight and size for effective deployment when time is critical. They are available for collection or delivery, with trade rates available on request — please call 01635 865679.

Do you deliver specialist materials throughout Berkshire?

Yes. We deliver specialist materials throughout Thatcham, Newbury, Reading and surrounding areas in Berkshire, North Hampshire and Southern Oxfordshire, with wider sourcing and delivery available for designer specified projects nationally. Bulk loose tipped, bulk bag and bagged options are available depending on the product. Contact us on 01635 865679 to confirm delivery options for your postcode.
