Common Uses for Our Materials
Frequently Asked Questions
What materials can I order online for home delivery?
You can order a wide range of landscaping and building materials online including topsoil, compost, bark and woodchip products, decorative gravels (Welshmans Golden, South Cerney, Old English, Kennet Flint, Heather Blue Slate and more), limestone chippings, sub base (Type 1 MOT, MOT Type 3, scalpings), sharp sand, building sand, plastering sand, ballast and gravel. All materials are available for loose tipped home delivery throughout Thatcham, Newbury, Reading and surrounding areas in Berkshire, North Hampshire and Southern Oxfordshire.
Which topsoil should I choose?
Grade A Topsoil is our highest quality screened topsoil — ideal for lawns, turfing and garden beds where you want the best growing conditions. Topsoil Grade B is a more economical option suited to bulk filling, general landscaping and areas where a premium finish is less critical. Sandy Loam Compost Soil (BS3882) is a premium blend meeting British Standards, combining sandy loam with quality compost for free-draining yet moisture-retentive growing conditions. Topsoil Compost Blend is ideal for enriching existing garden soil and raised beds. If you are unsure which is right for your project, call us on 01635 865679 for advice.
What is the minimum order for home delivery?
Minimum delivery quantities apply. The minimum is usually 0.5 tonnes when ordered over the phone or 1 tonne when ordered online (1 tonne is 1000kg — not 1 bulk bag which is typically around 700-900kg). Browse products on our website to see pricing and minimum order quantities for each material. For orders below the minimum or advice on quantities, call us on 01635 865679.
How does loose tipped delivery work?
Loose tipped delivery means the material is tipped directly from our vehicle onto your driveway or specified location. You will need suitable access for our delivery vehicle and a clear area where the material can be placed. The material will form a pile that you can then barrow or move to where it is needed. This is the most cost-effective delivery method for bulk quantities and is standard for all our loose materials.
Do you deliver to my area?
We deliver throughout Thatcham, Newbury, Reading and surrounding towns and villages across Berkshire, North Hampshire and Southern Oxfordshire. Our delivery area covers approximately 30 to 50 miles from our Thatcham depot. When you order online, enter your postcode to check delivery availability and see charges for your location. For postcodes outside our standard area, call 01635 865679 to discuss options. Check our delivery information page for full details.
What is the difference between Sharp Sand and Building Sand?
Sharp Sand (0-4mm) has coarser, angular grains ideal for concrete mixing, floor screeds and drainage applications where strength and drainage are important. Building Sand (also called soft sand or bricklaying sand) has finer, smoother particles perfect for bricklaying mortar, rendering and general building work where workability matters. Choose Sharp Sand for structural applications and Building Sand for mortar and rendering work.
What sub base do I need for my project?
Type 1 MOT is the most commonly used sub base material for driveways, paths, patios and general construction. It compacts well and provides a stable foundation. MOT Type 3 is a clean crushed stone without fines, used where drainage is a priority. 40mm Scalpings (6N Fill) is a general purpose fill material suitable for bulk filling and levelling. Not sure which you need? Call 01635 865679 for advice.
How quickly can you deliver after I order online?
Delivery times typically range from 2 to 5 working days depending on your location and our delivery schedule. During busy periods, lead times may be slightly longer. When you place your order online you will receive confirmation with an estimated delivery date. For urgent requirements, call us on 01635 865679 to discuss delivery options.
Can I collect instead of having it delivered?
No, we do not offer collections of loose tipped materials. We do keep some materials in pre-packed form — please visit the pre-packed page to see which products are available and our current stock levels.
