What is Hampshire Agricultural Lime?
Our Hampshire Agricultural Lime is a natural ground chalk graded from 15mm down to dust. Chalk is almost pure calcium carbonate, which makes it one of the most effective and natural ways to correct acidic soil. The mix of fine dust and larger particles means it works in two ways. The fine material reacts quickly to start raising soil pH straight away, while the coarser particles break down slowly over the following seasons for a longer lasting effect. You get an instant boost and slow release in a single application.
What specification is this lime?
Natural Hampshire chalk, graded 15mm to dust. Calcitic lime (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) with a neutralising value of [XX]%. Instant and slow release.
Where to use Hampshire Agricultural Lime?
Ideal for arable land, grassland and pasture, horse paddocks, smallholdings, allotments and vegetable gardens. It is also suitable for use on cattle housing floors, yards and cubicle beds. For best results we recommend a soil test before liming so you know your starting pH and how much lime you need. As a general guide, most arable land does best at around pH 6.5 and grassland at around pH 6.0.
Benefits for Your Soil
Acidic soil locks up nutrients and holds back growth, even when you are spending money on fertiliser. Liming brings the pH back into balance so plants can make full use of what is already in the ground.
- Neutralises acidic soil and raises pH
- Unlocks nutrients such as phosphate and potash so crops can use them
- Makes your fertiliser work harder and go further
- Supplies calcium, an essential plant nutrient
- Improves soil structure, helping heavy soils drain and breathe
- Encourages earthworms and healthy soil life
- Helps clover and grasses establish in pasture
- Helps reduce clubroot in brassicas
Cattle and Livestock Floors
Hampshire chalk is also suitable for cattle and livestock housing. Spread on cubicle beds, yards and floors, it soaks up moisture and raises the pH of the bed. Bacteria struggle to grow in dry, alkaline conditions, so keeping beds dry helps support udder health and cleaner cows. Ground chalk is much gentler than hydrated lime, so there is less risk of hock burns or dry, cracked teats. Lime is a drying agent rather than a disinfectant, so use it alongside regular cleaning, apply a thin, even layer to the back of the bed and top with your usual bedding.
Extra Information
Once bedding is mucked out, the chalk goes back onto the land with the manure, adding its liming benefit to your fields. Chalk is softer than limestone, so it breaks down readily in the soil.
- Instant and slow release in one product
- Natural, untreated chalk
- Suitable for soil and cattle floors
- Gentle on livestock
