What are 40mm Scalpings?
40mm Scalpings also known as 6N Fill consist of crushed stone from 40mm down to dust, creating economical fill material. Unlike Type 1, this material has uncontrolled fines content. Loose tipped delivery provides budget option for basic construction needs. It can often be stonier or dustier than Type 1 as it has no true spec.
How do Scalpings differ from Type 1?
6N Fill has no formal testing requirements unlike MOT Type 1. Variable fines content affects compaction and drainage. More economical due to less processing. This material is a by-product of Type 1 production.
Where to use Scalpings?
It is ideal for paths, and oversites where Type 1 not essential. Perfect for hardstandings and temporary surfaces. Excellent for pothole filling and levelling tracks. Popular for field entrances to combat mud. Suitable for non-critical sub-base applications. Suitable where specifications allow flexibility such as footpaths or patio's.
Extra Information
Compaction characteristics vary with fines content. May be dusty when dry and binds strongly when wet. Natural variation between loads expected. Often contains good-quality stone at economy price. Use Type 1 for adopted highways or critical applications with high traffic.
